View from the Hill

homesteading and virtual freelancing on the rock

Welcome to the Freedom Hill blog.

Two years ago we set out from Southern Ontario with the intention of separating ourselves from the rest of humanity and living entirely off the land. We quit our stressful, big city jobs, jetisoned half of our possessions, loaded up a huge truck, tossed the cat on board and headed across the country to Newfoundland.

Well, not exactly to Newfoundland…not really.

Our trip was a grand misadventure from start to finish, and though our original destination was Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, it wasn’t meant to be. You can read the whys and wherefores of that here if you’re so inclined. The long and short of it, however, is that we ended up crossing the ocean to homestead in the foothills of the Anguilles in a clearing we call Freedom Hill—not exactly the most high-yield land in the hemisphere, but arguably the most beautiful.

This blog is an extension of the Freedom Hill site. It’s a way for us to chronicle the goings on here on The Hill, to keep family and friends updated on our progress and to comment on what we’ve learned about the natural/frugal/sustainable/healthy lifestyle. And, since we still have to make a living on this adventure, it’s also a forum to rant and rave about the world of virtual freelancing.
