It looks as if we’re not the only extreme homesteaders in the world after all.
Writer Colin Beavan, his wife and young daughter have embarked on a year-long natural living experiment. They have no refrigerator, no air conditioner, no television. You won’t find any detergents or chemical based toiletries, either; they rely instead on vegetable oil, baking soda, vinegar and borax. Everything is recycled…they even have a worm-augmented compost bin in their kitchen. The family now travels by bicycle or on foot and eats foods bought at the local farmer’s market.
Nowadays we’re all into reducing our carbon footprint, but how many people go to this extreme, even as an experiment, and how many of them live in the middle of New York City?!
Yep, the Beavans live in a ninth-floor apartment in lower-Manhattan.
As with us, some folks think they’ve slipped their moorings. I’m just glad to find we’re not alone in our ‘madness’.
Go Beavans…you rock!
