Summer Camp for City Slickers
Earning Our Badges
M. Williams, June 2005

We spent the next two nights in the truck, while Loki introduced us to the neighbors. In honor of our first night of camping, and in light of the day's trauma, tea was in order. We arranged paper, twigs, and some convenient driftwood into our first campfire, applied the lighter and...nothing.

We tried again with no good results. Hmm, it looked easy enough on TV.

As we were wondering where our next cuppa was coming from, the skipper--campground super, ex-fisherman and all around handy chap--appeared. He walked straight to the fire pit, rearranged our pyre, struck the lighter and brought forth an instant, raging fire.

We offered our sheepish thanks.

To his infinite credit, he said nary a word about it, just grinned, nodded once and left the same way he had come.

Ok, so we didn't get the campfire badge. But  summer camp was just beginning.

On the third, and quite possibly the windiest day of the year, we attempted to set up our tent, a massive, two room, eight sleeper affair. Well, we were going to be living in it, after all!

Out came the big bag on wheels, which we emptied of its assorted rods, poles, ropes and several hundred feet of nylon. Out came the instructions. Out came our hair.

She was blowing a gale that day, to say the least, and as the tent ballooned up it nearly lifted us both off our feet. No sooner would we get one corner affixed than the wind would rip out the other, and the whole process began from scratch. We feared it--and we--would end up in the lake.

Enter the skipper to make short work of the job. Once again the sheepish thanks, and once again the grin.

So much for our tenting badge. Ah well, we'd get that later. For now it was time to ditch Goliath, and yet another adventure awaited us in this endeavour.
