Summer Camp for City Slickers Earning Our Badges M. Williams, June 2005
We
spent the next two nights in the truck, while Loki introduced us to the neighbors. In honor of our first night of camping, and in light of the day's trauma, tea was in order. We arranged paper, twigs, and some
convenient driftwood into our first campfire, applied the lighter and...nothing.We tried again with no good results. Hmm, it looked easy enough on TV. As we were wondering where our next cuppa was coming from, the
skipper--campground super, ex-fisherman and all around handy chap--appeared. He walked straight to the fire pit, rearranged our pyre, struck the lighter and brought forth an instant, raging fire.
We offered our sheepish thanks. To his infinite credit, he said nary a word about it, just grinned, nodded once and left the same way he had come. Ok, so we didn't get the campfire badge. But summer camp was
just beginning. On the third, and quite possibly the windiest day of the year, we attempted to set up our tent, a massive, two room, eight sleeper affair. Well, we were going to be living in it, after all!
